Konig (American) had a great turnout at the 2013 SEMA Show. As always, unveiled some new products (which you can check out on our Facebook page…HINT HINT!), some really cool vehicle builds, and of course two hot models! We were extremely honored to have a new FR-S in our booth with one of only a few Rocket Bunny Version 2 kits on it. That FR-S was provided by Ian Yu of Intuned Onlineand rolled-in sporting the Konig SSM 18×10 all the way around! We also showed a FRESH and mint built Acura NSX on the show floor, which showed-off the all-new Konig Oversteer in Gloss Black – coming 2014 (again, check our FB page for that)! The NSX paired well with the Scion FR-S. Other vehicles included a new Jeep Wrangler, which was built by Projekt Cars and Southwestern University showing off our Mamba Offroad Wheel line. The new JK was all decked-out for off-road use with Mamba M13 Wheels. Race Ramps provided their 14 inch Race Rock, which supported one side of the Jeep, and gave it a nice off-road touch for the show floor. Big shout out to all the vendors and partners that made all of these builds possible. Bravado Wheels Featured a 2012 Cadillac CTS with Tributes in Matte Black. A brand-new Mercedes E-350 showed-off the all-new Advanti Racing Hybris (Gloss Black). The Hybris will be coming in 2014 make sure to check Advanti Racing USA’s FB page! Jeff Seldomridge has been a friend to Konig for years now. He is a grassroots racer that actively campaigns in NASA events with his Mazda Miata. Here is a writeup he did about his experience at Grassroots Magazine’s Ultimate Track Car Challenge at Virginia International Raceway.
By the early afternoon we finally had the cars new Konig Wheels graphics on, the suspension fixed, the wheels aligned and vehicle secured in the trailer. It is time to get this show on the road. The trip goes well and we arrive safely around 6:30pm. We set up our paddock and begin to unload the car. Here is where the fun begins.
The Ultimate Track Car Challenge begins. Everything from a Subaru station wagon to Lamborghini Super Trofeo we out on track racing for the best lap times. We were separated into two groups, Group B which is fast and Group A which is light speed. Since this was a race for fastest time, the GRM did not want any accidents to occur from slow moving traffic on track.
We landed in position 20 of 31, I certainly was not the fastest but I did the best I could with a car that was simply not dialed in. During the timed sessions on Friday we had a horrible issue with the car giving massive under steer through turns 1, 4, 11 and 17. Without these turns being solid I could not build momentum to the next turn. Momentum is crucial for a low horsepower car. These few turns at VIR are pivotal for just a single fast lap. The fastest I have lapped at VIR is 2:15.1 and I was down at 2:21.4. The difference almost hurt my feelings; I could not believe all this change led to this.
The next day for Saturday’s practice the car handled with considerable difference at 2:19.6. That time is fast enough to have a good race. During Qualifying the exhaust pipe snapped near the header flange, causing exhaust fumes to fill the cockpit. This again, is unacceptable. I cannot risk literally passing out behind the wheel due to carbon monoxide poisoning. So we burned through the paddock hoping to find someone with a welder. Not only did we find someone, he offered to weld it together for free! We were able to make the race because of him and I was grateful.
The race starts. We have an unusual start; our class was placed behind a group of considerably slower class called Spec E30. By the end of the first lap we were all getting jammed into heavy lap traffic. Although the racing was tight and a bit nerve racking, I was able to fight for 3rd place and keep it. I had 1st and 2nd in my sights the whole race but I just did not have enough left in the car to make any safe passes. 3rd place it is and I am completely happy with the result. It raised my spirit, especially after being stripped of 2nd place at the last Hyperfest event in June due to a technical error.
At the end of the day, sun burnt and tired, my dad leaned on my shoulder. He gave me a handshake and said “We earned it this time, son”. I smiled because after all the fails and mistakes, we did our best. Yet, the people that helped us out, at home and at the track, are all I can think of. I will be there to return the favor when their time comes. Of this I have no doubt. -Jeff Seldomridge

Konig Wheels would like to extend a very happy, enjoyable and most importantly, safe Independence Day!
“Our greatest happiness does not depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed us, but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation and freedom in all just pursuits.”
Nowadays, different and subtle changes make all the difference when styling a vehicle. Wesley Marsh’s 2008 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition is no exception. Wesley used this Platinum Grey exterior as a base, and worked in orange accents throughout the interior/exterior and combined it with a whole slew of performance and automotive sound upgrades. Marsh has chosen the Privat Remembers in Gold with Machined Lip , which is an aggressive wheel with nostalgic appeal and applied his orange blend aesthetic.
The Privat Remember is a retro, European-styled, which comes in a Gold Finish with a Mirror Machined Lip, OR Silver Finish with a Mirror Machined Lip. An Aluminum hex center cap completes that polished look while securely fastening the cover plate and hiding the lugs.
Konig would like to thank Complex Rides for showing us love in their “10 Best Aftermarket Wheel Manufacturers Right Now” feature.Konig made the cut on the #8 spot among the likes of BBS, OZ racing and others.

The start of the 2013 Nitto Tires United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC) has started heating up some of the best tracks around! This season promises to be one of the best seasons in USTCC history with some awesome tracks and extreme levels of competition. Race # 2 will be at the longest race track in all of North America; Utah’s Miller Motorsports Park . The USTCC teams will putting their cars through some terrific terrain on the 4.5 mile road course with a breath taking 3500 foot straightaway towards turn one.
There are lots of new cars and lots of new teams for 2013. Some of the existing teams will be expanding their efforts with added drivers and cars. The GoGoGear.com team will be running three cars at most races while they will field four cars at selected events with the addition of their new E90 BMW chassis to their existing BMW M3 and the always popular Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
We will be bringing you up to date information following the race in only a few short weeks! Best of luck to all of the competitors. Check out the Gogogear Hyundai Genesis Coupe driven by Ali Arsham #33.
After a seemingly long wait, the day finally came. The time for checking and double checking is over. It is time to race! The qualifying session was crowded but fast allowing everyone to play nice earning us a 5th place on starting grid. Starting 5th from front is a huge advantage with minimal lap traffic and clean air. The 4 cars in front of me and 3 cars behind me are in PTE also, making for an interesting start.
After squeezing the life out of the Miata it had yielded a much deserved 3rd place. It’s a warm feeling that comes over any racer when they podium a race, it is a sense of belonging to something greater than racing. It is hard to explain. The car was going home in one piece which is always a good thing after a day of wheel to wheel racing! ” I would do anything to reach 1st place, but I haven’t earned it yet. I have much to learn, as does my crew, so we will continue to do so until the end.”
Next race is June 14th at Summit Point Hyperfest. It is the biggest event of the year for the NASA organization. Hyperfest has got so much to offer the modern car enthusiast that every year gets better. It is a televised and sponsored event supported by the teams, the spectators and some of the biggest industry names.
Jeff Seldomridge JandJRacing will be there and with any luck we will get podium again.
Dennis Mertzanis and his brand new Hyundai Genesis Coupe have made their debut at the 2013 Formula Drift tech day this last weekend. He has been testing rigoriously at Buttonwillow raceway to dial in the car in time for the season opener. The streets of long beach is about to turn in record ticket sales for the 2013 season starting in Long Beach April 12-13. The new setup has gobs of power with an already potent 3.8L v6 under the hood; that was just not enough to break the tires at 80mph. A Brian Crower 4.0L stroker kit was exactly what the car needed, oh and the addition of a large turbocharger the car will easily blow the tires off at well over 100mph. The car is now putting out a wopping 600hp and 540ft/tq
This month’s calendar warms things up with Elaina Christina and the Konig Torch which is available in: 17 x 7.5, 17 x 8.5, 17 x 9.5, 18 x 8, 18 x 9, 18 x 10, 19 x 8.5 and 19 x 9.5 (diameters) in Full Matte Black with Ball Milled Accents and Silver with Machined Face (finishes).

We want to congratulate Ali Arsham along with Gogogear.com for putting work in during the 2012 season. Those excellent times and exceptional driving has made the team eager for more. The 2013 season is not going to be an easy one but we know the team has the drive and determination to do what it takes. This article by Downshift Magazine is from the 2012 season opener where they just missed the podium by one spot! We are excited to see what the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is going to do at this years season opener, April 13th & 14th at Thunderhill Raceway in Sonoma California.
Did you checkout Dsport recently? Well if not you missed some cool Konig stuff in issues 123 (January) and 124 (Febrary)! In February they were tuning their Turbocharged Honda Fit which spun the rollers to 164whp/166wtq. The Fit which also had an excellent spread in the January issue, featuring the KONIG Wideopen in 15×8″ ET+20; is now taking this project a step further by completely revamping the car from the ground up. The 15×8 wheels are now not only helping in the handling department for this nimble machine but also in keeping the power down to the ground. These were a huge improvement over the Fit’s 15×6″ OEM sizing. Stay tuned for more updates!
Our good friend Ali Arsham at Gogogear.com who runs the number 33 Hyundai Genesis in NASA’s USTCC series brought both the Genesis and the USTCC Kia Optima pacecar featuring 18” Konig Backbone wheels to the San Francisco International Auto Show back in November. As you may have seen on here before the Genesis Coupe is running Konig Kilograms in 18″. The race cars received excellent feedback from the audience.
The showing gained interest from men and woman alike; that is, men and woman interested in race cars. The show was sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle and AutoTrader.com. This gave some of the larger manufactures a chance to show off their latest and greatest. At the event there was a booth setup for “Ride and Drive” which hosted such manufactures as GM, Nissan and Scion. This allowed the spectators to sign up and drive the cars around under a normal setting. In the past Chevy had something similar; “Rev it Up” allowed the drivers to put the cars through 1000ft drag stretch, autocross course and other exciting transitions to get the car loose and leave you smiling the whole time. While this was not nearly as exciting, this was something that 99.999% of the people who were at the show were interested in. How does the car drive on the road everyday and is this the car for me? This gave the spectators the opportunity to drive the car around under supervision with a representative from each company. This allowed the potential buyers the ability to ask questions and get answers on the fly. Traction control remained on so clipping perfect apexes was unavailable during the 15 minute session. The spectators loved the Hyundai Genesis Coupe so much that they even posted a picture of it on the SF Auto Show website. http://www.sfautoshow.com/special-attractions/aftermarket-alley/
At the show they had a display set up that let spectators view the USTCC race cars and were given the opportunity to get information about USTCC series. Having the vehicles displayed sparked interest as to both the beautiful Konig wheels that were displayed on the race cars but also gained interested in the sport. People were grabbing the Konig information pamphlets faster than they could be replaced.
We can’t thank all of the members of USTCC enough especially the wonderful people of team Gogogear.com racing!

**This is the official recap written by and courtesy of the Mertzanis Racing team from Formula Drift Round 6: “After Dark” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway – August 24th – 25th**
Right after pulling off the trailer on Thursday night, we went into the private paid practice and started bumper banging on the k-rails, and scraping paint and decals off the rear bumper. With some sway bar tweaks, and a Kenda Tire pressure adjustment, the car felt unstoppable. A full day before qualifying, the car felt fantastic to Dennis Mertzanis and the whole Mertzanis Racing crew.
Friday practice, before qualifying Dennis went out chasing Kyle Mohan, who is one of the fastest drivers on the circuit. Dennis wanted to see how quick the car setup for the weekend was overall. These screen grabs were pulled from our GoPro camera that has a video you can see here.
Dennis explains, “Well, we went flying into the first outer clip together. What is normally a full throttle affair, Mohan went too close to the wall, and hard-braked, slowing down a lot. I was coming in hot and couldn’t slow down fast enough. We made contact and I hit the wall knocking the suspension out of alignment.”
The team worked quickly to get the car back in race trim. Only one KÖNIG Milligram wheel was damaged beyond repair, since it made high-speed contact with the rear bash bar on Kyle Mohan’s Mazda Rx-8. After his two runs, Dennis finished 19th for Kenda Tires, which lined him up against Ryan Tuerck in the Retaks S13. This was a rematch from Round 1 at Streets of Long Beach.
On Saturday, just before competition brought on rain and crazy wind as the drivers hit the track. Luckily, we had a rain setup for the car on standby, but it all dried up before Dennis got on the track for his Top 32 battle. Ryan Tuerck led the first battle in his S13.5 against our Chevrolet Performance Parts powered LS3 S13.4. Dennis held a somewhat conservative, but all around solid follow run behind Tuerck.
After the smoke settled, the judges gave the win over to Ryan Tuerck eliminating Dennis Mertzanis from this weekend’s competition. The team came together and really made huge developments with the S13. Dennis is planning on a huge month of testing in September to get ready for the final round at Irwindale Speedway coming up in October.

**This is the official recap written by and courtesy of the Mertzanis Racing team from Formula Drift Round 5: “Throwdown” at Evergreen Speedway, Monroe, Washington July 20-21**
With some rain hovering around Evergreen Speedway, qualifying in Seattle was going to be a tough challenge. Dennis managed to line up for run 1 before the rain came down, and he rode the bank wall, scoring a huge 80 for his run. He came in through the speed traps at 79.5mph (Speed 1 trap point – 65mph minimum for score) and 38mph (Speed 2 trap point – 35mph minimum for score) and landed one of his best performances in his career.
His second qualifying run with the surface being wet was not an improvement due to the harsh driving conditions laid out by the unpredictable Washington weather. His second run fell short at 65, but still put him in a great position for the main event.
The main event Saturday served up a whole new round of conditions and temperature meaning the team had to make some serious and quick changes. The KW Clubsport suspension had to be moved into different settings along with some alignment changes on our SPL Suspension parts. At last, a quick tire pressure change on the Kenda Tires and the car was ready for a Top 32 round against Daijiro Yoshihara.
The morning practice after these adjustments saw Dennis riding the bank wall so deep he was ripping sponsor banners off the bank walls and leaving them scattered around Evergreen Speedway. He even had some great tandem runs with drivers such as former champion Rhys Millen in his 2013 Hyundai Genesis.
The Top 32 tandem battle put Dennis up against the reigning champion in his Discount Tire S13 for one insane battle. In the following run, Dennis managed to go deeper than the champion coming around the bank, but held onto his car at full lock, no problem. He put together a great run leaving a huge opportunity for victory with his lead run.
Dennis once again went in deep into the bank and came flying into the power alley at full lock and throttle, getting ready for the tight turns to finish the course. All was looking fantastic as his earlier adjustments made the car look like it was going to be a victorious battle.
Tons of smoke was pouring out of the Fuelculture S13.4 as the Kenda Tires screamed through the power alley. Right at this point, Dennis Mertzanis was unable to rotate back with the car and wound up putting it into the k-rail, ending his tandem run early and resulting in damage to his front suspension. This ended the weekend a little early, but the Mertzanis Racing team is ready for Las Vegas now that everything has been replaced from the Seattle battle damage.
**This is the official recap written by and courtesy of Lutz Performance from Formula Drift Round 5: “Throwdown” at Evergreen Speedway, Monroe, Washington July 20-21**
Round 5 was pure madness the entire time. From two weeks before the event, to the final judging call against Ken Gushi in Top 32. With a new motor in the car and with the help of a Brian Crower stroker kit and cams, we were looking to make some big power. This big power came at a cost because we broke a camshaft. Luckily the old cams were roughly the same size. We were able to get the car running in time for Hal from Dynosty to get it on a local dyno. We ran into some ridiculous wiring issues that prevented us from tuning the car and ended up spending the next 4 days sorting it out. We finally solved the issues which were related to a brand new alternator and power wire that we had put in a few days before. Then on the dyno we had and issue with the AEM base map unlocking the cams, and some fuel delivery issues which maxed us out on fuel way too soon. We then had to tune around that and only ended up making 600 HP. With the car strapped in we left Dynosty happy that we finally had the car working right and headed straight for Monroe.
Thursday morning we got in, set up, and got ready for practice. This was a true test of all of our efforts thus far. Starting out good we felt that the car may be a little underpowered after half the session, so we keep our focus on setting the suspension for the bank. By the end of practice the wiring bugs came back. This was causing the fans to cut off randomly resulting in some very extreme over-heating situations that we were lucky to stay on the good side with.
Friday morning we fixed the fan issue and swapped out the diffs to help move through the power a little easier. We also made some small alignment changes that helped settle the car and made Kenny very happy. So from here everything seemed golden….. But evil would show its face yet again. Kenny started complaining of downshifting issues coming into the infield. As practice went on the issues got worse, and mimicked the same issues that lead to our early defeat in New Jersey. Kenny powered through the issues for the remainder of practice and qualifying, even top32 practice that night. However you could still see his discomfort. So with HUGE THANKS to Bridges Racing, we got to work on getting the clutch out before the end of the night, again huge thanks to them for letting us do this.
Saturday Morning was early, chilly, but much drier than Friday. So we got in early and started immediately on clutch swap as we only had 2.5 hours before the Top 32 practice. We were able to complete this task just in time, dropped the car down and swapped on some fresh tires just as the first few cars started to make a pass. Practice went very smooth, and Kenny was very happy. We were paired up with Ken Gushi for the 2nd time this season, and we knew it was going to be a tough one. The battle ended up going to Gushi after Kenny dropped a tire over the line coming off the bank and ended our long journey early in the fight. Sucks to take a blow to the gut like that after so much work, but hey that’s racing. The only thing we can do is come back better and harder for Vegas. And we will be out for blood!
For those of you who remember our 2010 Project Honda CR-Z build for SEMA it was recently featured on the SPEED Channel’s Honda CR-Z Concepts.
The article features a collection of CR-Z’s, which were awarded to a select few companies for a special build. Companies included but not limited to; KÖNIG Wheels, HPD, Bisimoto Engineering, Eibach Springs and DSO Eyewear.
KÖNIG’s concept featured a set of KÖNIG Milligrams in matte black, a Synergy Green paint scheme with matte black accents along the sides of the car, Thule rack, custom Kicker Audio system, Eibach Springs, Weapon-R Performance components and so much more! KÖNIG’s objective of the concept was to combine Tuner style with various lifestyle and sports attributes including Skateboarding, Surfing and BMX.
All CR-Z concepts were shown off in a special area within the Honda booth at the 2010 SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
After the SEMA show, the KÖNIG Wheels Honda CR-Z spent that entire year attending various auto shows and many large international auto shows as well as some spotlight appearances on the show floor of Honda dealerships.
KÖNIG would like to thank Honda Motors for another great opportunity. Special thanks to Whitfield Racing for their efforts in making this a successful build and all the great companies who helped make this happen.
Round 4 of Formula Drift could not have come at a better time for the Mertzanis Racing team. The Fuel Culture S13 rolled off the trailer and started ripping in practice. An Aeromotive fuel cell was loaded with VP Racing 110 octane fuel and Dennis proceeded to put down quality runs at high speeds around the Wall Speedway course.
This is the first banked track of the season we venture to in the Formula Drift series and it results in serious adjustments to the suspension overall and some minor tire pressure adjustments. The result allows Dennis to enter into the bank aggressively and stay flat out for the bottom figure 8 part of the course.
Things became super tricky as qualifying kicked off and the weather changed to rain pouring down. Dennis’ first qualifying run was the key to locking him into the show which ranked him 21st overall.
The draw for Top 32 was a battle against the Go Pro x Mobil 1 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Tyler McQuarrie in a tough first round battle. With Tyler qualifying higher, Dennis’ first duty was to put down a follow run which he performed flawlessly. Dennis then held a tight line against the very fast Camaro going through the complete course.
When Dennis was leading, he took such a high and aggressive line into the bank that he was pushed out into the wall coming off the bank and crashed into the barrier at the last second in an attempt to pull out a giant lead on Tyler McQuarrie. The car came out of it with very minimal damage, luckily, but it did allow Tyler to continue into the Top 16.

For the second time this season Kenny Moen / Lutz Performance has made it to the top 8.
This passed weekend at Formula Drift Round 3: West Palm Beach, Florida, Moen and the entire Lutz performance team came out firing.
Showing up to an FD event is hard enough but Moen continuously proves he is able to attack and conquer. On Friday, during Round 3 at West Palm Beach, an abundance of bad weather including heavy rain came down on the event. The on and off rain really fluctuated and adjusted the temperature. But cooling down the track did not prevent Moen from doing well in the first qualifying round. Moen and the Lutz Peformance / KÖNIG Wheels sponsored 350Z had a very aggressive practice and smooth transition going into the Top 32.
The weather did not seem to let up in the second run either. This caused the car to have major traction issues. With such a high rate of speed, Kenny ended up receiving a 0 due the fact that the track was wet. Over coming his scored 0, Moen ended up defeating his first competitor in the top 32 , Matt Powers, which progressed him into the Top 16.
The top 16 put Moen against Ken Gushi. Gushi provided an entertaining match up but Moen was able to defeat him and move into the Top 8. Drawing a former FD Champion, Chris Forsberg, in the top 8 is always going to present an extremely tough battle. Moen was mentally focused and had an amazing first run against Chris Forsberg giving him the lead. While the matchup between Moen and Forsberg was heating up, the Lutz performance car seemed to have its own major opponent which it would not be able to overcome. Clutch difficulties and the attributed loss of power in the 350z, allowed Forsberg to catch up. Ultimately this would be the day ender for the Moen / Lutz / Konig team. All in all it was a fantastic event. While the Lutz 350z sustained body and mechanical damage during RD 3, but this won’t hold the team back as they are now in the repair process to prepare for RD 4 in Wall, New Jersey on June, 22nd and 23rd.
KÖNIG would like to congratulate Kenny Moen and Lutz Performance on their fantastic effort and top 8 finish. We look forward to the next event. Stay tuned for more pictures and videos from Round 3 as well as upcoming coverage from RD 4!
Before the Fuel Culture S13.4 was shipped to the East Coast to Road Atlanta, the car headed to the Sea Otter Classic at Laguna Seca for the huge 2012 bicycle show. Over 60,000 people came through the doors in Monterey, California, to see the show and catch a glimpse of the drift car. The 240sx was parked in the center of the Kenda Tire booth who built out a virtual garage around the car to attract visitors. This was one of the only vehicles at the whole show this year, gathering tons of attention.
After leaving the Sea Otter Classic, the car headed east across the United States to Atlanta, Georgia in preparation of Formula Drift Round 2. Some tweaks to air pressure and our KW Suspension between rounds really set the team up for success after Road Atlanta.
During qualifying, Dennis managed to put down his best career qualifying run of 89.5 at his hometown course Road Atlanta. The car didn’t require as much setup adjustments to accomplish this huge career accomplishment. He was one of the few drivers to meet the speed trap minimum for the weekend.
After qualifying, we found out that we would be lined up against Top 10 driver, Kyle Mohan, who didn’t qualify at his usual top level performance which gave us one tough draw in the first round. Dennis and the team made some last minute adjustments and put down some of the best lead runs he has driven in his career by far. After one round, the judges were stuck at 1 vote for Dennis, 1 vote for Kyle, and 1 vote for OMT.
On the OMT tandem battle, Dennis performed top notch on his lead run but made a wide turn on his follow run which let Kyle Mohan pass into the Top 16 with 2 votes for Kyle and 1 vote for Dennis. A tough break for the team who performed near perfect all weekend but we are looking forward to Palm Beach International.
The next day after Road Atlanta, the Mertzanis Racing team attended what might be the last event at Turner Field with several other Formula Drift professional drivers. The city council in Atlanta, Georgia, signed an ordinance that bans drifting specifically in the city of Atlanta within 1,000 feet of residential zoning. This made it very personnel for Dennis Mertzanis as he first learned how to drift and hone his skills in this very parking lot.
Sadly, the weather didn’t cooperate with this final Turner Field event but Dennis brought out his Fuel Culture S13.4 in the rain to tandem with local drivers and promote the sport within the local area. He talked with various media outlets on the importance of the sport and the need to continue in grassroots events and why it’s best to create events and have safe, controlled environments so as to keep drivers off the streets.
It has been a busy month in back to back travel. And with Round 3 at Palm Beach International Raceway just right around the corner, Dennis Mertzanis will continue onwards and upwards by shooting for another career best finish at Round 3.

We are always getting some really cool stuff shared by our fans and friends. Ali Arsham is no exception. Mr. Arsham runs GoGoGear.com. GoGoGear specializes in Custom Graphics, Apparel and Promotional Products. Ali Arsham has been racing for 22 years. He is also a fabricator and one of his more recent builds was the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. If you follow our blog, then you know the exposure this car has received since it was debuted. The car has traveled to various Auto Shows and Events across the country. However, this Genesis Coupe is by no means just a sweet race-built show car. On May 22nd, 2012 at Thunderhills Raceway in Willows California it shared 3rd place in the 2nd round of the Nitto Tires United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC).
Ali and the GoGoGear team just shared this image of the Genesis Coupe in action on the big screen in Times Square, New York, NY. This is certainly exciting for KONIG Wheels, GoGoGear and the USTCC. Check out the image below. Let us know in the comment section if you were walking down 7th Avenue in Times Square and saw this on the screen!
Ali Arsham Scores his First Podium for the GoGoGear.com/Konig Wheels Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Willows, Calif., May 22, 2012 – Ali Arsham, driving the GoGoGear.com/Konig Wheels Hyundai Genesis Coupe, finished in third place in round two of the Nitto Tires United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC) at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, California. The team fought hard against many other manufacturers including Volvo, Mazda, Dodge, Honda, Acura, Mitsubishi and BMW using crew mostly comprised of students and instructors from Universal Technical Institute, a leading training school for future automotive technicians.
The race started off in a normal fashion with Robert Thorne’s K-PAX Volvo C30 starting from pole position and assuming the lead. A fight soon began between the Volvo of Thorne and the TNI Racing Mazdaspeed 3 of Felipe Cabezas. Cabezas was glued to the yellow Volvo and would not let Thorne get away. The two started to pull away from everyone else and nearly collided on the first lap in Turn 6. Behind the pair, Arsham’s Hyundai was running on a completely different strategy. Things really got interesting as soon as the fuel stops started to come into play.
After about 90 minutes of racing the battle for the final podium spot started to heat up. Arsham’s Hyundai was running in third place in the latter part of the race. “My strategist was on the radio telling me that Cabezas was on the same lap as me and was gaining on me quickly. He did the math and said that I need to speed up considerably or I will get passed,” commented Arsham after the race.
The GoGoGear.com team’s strategy was bold and risky from the beginning. They decided to try and complete the race without stopping for fuel. “Hyundais are known for their excellent reliability and fuel economy. We knew that these were the strengths of our Del City.net Genesis Coupe and knew that we needed to use those strengths to gain an advantage,” added Arsham.
On lap 39, the Mazda caught up and passed Arsham and it looked like the Mazda was headed to the podium. But five laps later, the Mazda was forced to pit. The turbocharged engine was thirsty and needed more fuel while the 3.8-liter V6 engine in the Hyunai was providing much better fuel economy. The TNI Racing Team crew hurried and did a super quick pit stop lap of 3:03, the fastest pit stop of the day to try to send Cabezas in front of Arsham. But as the car was still in the pits, Arsham roared by the pits and reclaimed third place. Then both teams started to work out the math to figure out the gap. With only five laps left in the race, Arsham’s crew radioed him to step it up. They knew that third place was theirs to lose. Arsham started to click his personal best laps in the last five laps of the race trying to stop Cabezas from catching him. The TNI Racing crew also knew what was going on and were telling Cabezas that he needs to step it up. While on the last lap, Cabezas was behind the winner but one lap down and the checkered flag was shown. Cabezas was done but Arsham who still had not received the checkered flag had one more lap to finish.
Everything was looking good but suddenly at Turn 9, the Hyundai slowed down out of fuel. “I knew it was out of gas because we have done considerable testing and know exactly what the car will and will not do. I knew that if I can get to Turn 14, I would be in good shape because it is a right hand turn and the fuel pick up is on the left side. Sure enough, just when it looked like the car was done, it came back to life,” said a very happy Arsham. The Hyundai crossed the finish line and then stopped on the side of the track, just after the pit exit in third place. “We used Hyundai’s fuel economy to our advantage to score a podium finish. This was our first podium finish in our Hyundai. Being able to do it with the help of the Universal Technical Institute students and instructors, is a real bonus,“ added Arsham.
The GoGoGear.com Racing team will be racing their Hyundai Genesis Coupe at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA on June 16-17, 2012 joining the National Auto Sport Association for their big summer racing festival. For more information visit www.gogogear.com or www.ustcc.com
Formula Drift always puts out an exciting event. Round 2 at Road Atlanta was no different. It was certainly shaping up to be a solid even for Kenny Moen #22 and the Lutz Performance / KÖNIG Wheels sponsored 350Z.
Moen qualified with 91pts on the first pass, and 92pts in the second pass with a 5th place (overall). In the top 32 Moen was assigned to match up against Walker Wilkinson. While looking good and driving well in this round of the top 32, Moen experience suspension difficulties on the 3rd pass.
The control arm broke which caused the axle to break. Even with the damage on hand it was not over. The rules state that 5 minutes would be supplied to fix the vehicle. The Lutz Performance team gave it their best effort to carry out the repairs on the car however the time seemed to prove too much of a match for them.
Running out of time closed the round 2 chapter on Moen / Lutz Performance and the team. They will be back though, and are vowing to make Round 3 the best yet! Formula Drift Round 3: “The Invasion” in Palm Beach Florida is fast approaching and Kenny and the team are pushing for that coveted spot atop the podium.
Check out this awesome video segment of Kenny Moen at Round 2, which was put together by Ross Fairfield.
KÖNIG is proud to be partnered with Lutz Performance and Kenny Moen for the 2012 Formula Drift Season. Check out the FD Round 1 recap from Lutz Performance below.
Last year, Lutz Performance had the opportunity of partnering with Kenny Moen and helping him with the 2011 Formula D season as a sponsor. Fast forward to today and we are pleased to announce that we are this year’s title sponsor for car #22. This is the FIRST time in Formula D’s history that a local performance shop is the main sponsor on a car.
We obviously couldn’t do all of this without the help of our other sponsors:
KÖNIG Wheels, Carbonetics, Stance Coilovers, GT Spec, Powered by MAX, VIS Racing, SPL Parts, Prosport Gauges, Falken Tires
Went a lot better than we had expected for our first round as a Main / Major sponsor. Our first run was against Darren McNamara in Falken Tire’s Saturn Sky who unfortunately crashed on his first run and knocking himself out of the event.
Next we took on Conrad Grunewald in the Hankook Camaro and defeated him and advanced to the top 8. Up next we had to beat Matt Powers in the Need 4 Speed 240sx to make it into the top 4.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen and our Round 1 experience came to an end. Although we did not have a podium finish we feel that the team did a great job for our first event,
we hope this is the beginning of a great season with much more to come. We are also pleased to announce that Kenny Moen has signed with team Lutz Performance for the 2013 FD season, look out for his 2013 season car design being release after Round 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
